Kitchen Remodel Dec 2018
We finally decided to improve the kitchen. We had golden oak hardwood cabinets and a green/blue laminate countertop. The cabinets did not have any decorative moulding and they were all uniform - no dimensionality.
The island had a raised bar portion that was raised 10 inches high. I don't have a picture of that, but below is the picture with the bar raise cut down to only4 inches.
Step 1 was to have some dimensionality in the cabinet above the microwave and over the fridge. In addition, we added a light rail moulding at the bottom of the cabinets and decorative crown moulding on the top.
Some other things needing to change were the fluorescent light above the island, the chandelier above the table (the light shades were relocated to the den fan), the old white appliances, and the stainless steel sink faucet.
The cabinets were in great condition so we opted to just paint them - using Mountain Peak White from Benjamin Moore. We upgraded the kitchen countertops to granite - Venetian Ice. The receptacle on the side of the island was moved to the center of the raised bar portion (see final picture in this blog).
A new faucet - oil rubbed bronze - was added in addition to a new stainless steel sink.
Given the updates, my old green/cream rug looked outdated, so I updated with a more modern runner that brings out the natural gold/brown color of the Venetian Ice granite.
Also added a new light over the kitchen table. Notice how the new light has curved elements to match the curved elements of the island light and the curved element of the kitchen faucet.
In the above picture, shows the updated light as well as updated home-made curtains and more modern rug to match the new runner and bridge to the den rug colors. It also has a good view of the overlook deck through the window - which is an extension of the home (see blog on backyard renovation for more info).
Finally, the view of the den from the kitchen appears a little more open with the island only raised up 4 inches.

On the island, I repeated the moulding pattern from the den - the large squares on bottom and smaller squares on top. Also added finishing panels on the bottom cabinets (see cabinet beside dishwasher below). These finishing panels are also on each side of the island. The picture below also shows the upgraded appliances. In addition, over cabinet and under cabinet lighting was added along with the new light above the island.
